What is emetophobia?
Emetophobia is the fear of being sick or vomiting and affects many people’s lives.
They may be obsessed by other people’s health, and will try to avoid anyone with an illness for fear of catching it themselves or being physically sick. Equally distressing for them is actually seeing someone being sick. In acute cases this may stop the person from venturing out of the safe comfort zone of their own homes. What is the cause of emetophobia?
Like all fears and phobias, emetophobia is created by the unconscious mind as a protective block. At some time in your past, there is likely to be an event linking being sick or vomiting and emotional trauma.
What effects can it have on a person’s life?
Emetophobia can have serious impact on someone’s life. The ‘emetophobic’ may avoid pubs, restaurants, public transport, eating with other people, hospitals, pregnancy (due to possibility of morning sickness) and social occasions. If the symptoms are really acute then the person may not even leave their own home.
